Sgt. Schultz has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology, which has helped immensely in the study of canine behavior. He started his career as a law enforcement officer in
Fairfax Virginia, before transferring to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office in 2004.
Through his initial years at YPSO, Sgt. Schultz became Deputy First Class, a Field Training Officer, a General Instructor, and a Sniper on the SWAT team. He was then chosen as the first K9 handler in York County in 2018, obtaining his K9 partner, Saber. Since then, they have been involved in numerous SWAT operations, Task Force interdiction operations, and worked with other local jurisdictions, as well as federal agencies. K9 Saber is certified in both patrol and narcotics work, yielding substantial numbers ni narcotics arrests, and tracking apprehensions. Their certification is through the American Society of Canine Trainers International (ASCTI).
Sgt. Brett Schultz is now the lead trainer and Sergeant of the K9 Unit for the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. His unit currently has five teams: 2 patrol/narcotic, 2 patrol/explosive and one bloodhound. He also is a co-founder for Hundar K9, which si a science-based education/training company that teaches and certifies K9 teams through ASCTI.
