Joseph Auriemma

Investigative Interviewing Instructor

Joseph Auriemma, Jr., CFI, INCI served with the New York State Police for over twenty-four years, retiring as a Senior Investigator where he was responsible for the direct supervision of all criminal investigations conducted by the five Investigators and twenty-five uniform Troopers assigned to his station.

Throughout his tenure with the New York State Police, Joseph worked as a uniform Trooper, a “backroom” investigator; he spent two years assigned to a Child Advocacy Center conducting investigations into crimes against children and worked six years in the Major Crimes Unit investigating homicides, suspicious deaths, and other serious crimes.  Over the course of seventeen years within the Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Joseph skillfully conducted thousands of interviews and interrogations, making substantial contributions to both the investigations and their successful prosecutions.

Joseph has been a certified polygraph examiner since 2015 and was one of two Regional Coordinators responsible for overseeing the New York State Police Polygraph Unit and its thirty-nine examiners. He created and developed a comprehensive enhancement of both the criminal and pre-employment examination testing framework, including the establishment of a new quality control program.

Joseph possesses a wealth of expertise in curriculum and training development, garnered through his distinguished career with the State Police. Notably, he held the role of lead instructor at the New York State Police Academy for Investigative Interviewing, Crisis Negotiation as well as both the Basic and Advanced Search Warrant courses.  In his capacity as an instructor, he consistently authored comprehensive curriculum and delivered training sessions to the more than 4,500 sworn members within the State Police.  Additionally, his instruction extended to the New York State Preparedness Training Center, where he made substantial contributions in areas such as Investigative Interviewing, Search Warrants, Cellular Phone Analysis, and Crisis Negotiation.

Joseph developed a resource guide that was issued to all sworn members of the New York State Police to be used when conducting criminal investigations.  The interactive guide provided members with information and templates in areas such as cellular phone investigations, social media investigations, financial investigations, search warrants, school emergency responses, missing and runaway investigations, and more.  In May 2019, Joseph was the recipient of the George M. Searle Memorial Award, which is an award presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves in training and education within the State Police.

In addition to his standing as a Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI), Joseph achieved the distinction of becoming an International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) Nationally Certified Instructor (INCI).  This prestigious recognition is reserved for individuals who have shown an unwavering commitment to excellence in delivering criminal justice training.  He is also certified as a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Instructor for Police Topics.

Did not expect the training to be as good as it was. Extremely helpful and Joe did an awesome job. The personal experiences of successes and “not so great successes” were helpful. Strongly recommend and strongly recommend to be active in the chat. Ask questions. He will answer!

I really enjoyed the Investigative Interviewing class, I'm glad that you went over the hour to keep covering things and not skipping over. I watched the first part live and had to jump off but I rewatched the recording again as it was such great material and to see the second half I missed.
