David R. Huckabee, Attorney and Legal Instructor, brings extensive prosecutorial, advisory, and academic experience to his work with law enforcement and legal professionals. He has served in multiple prosecutorial roles across Kansas and currently holds a leadership position within the Geary County Attorney’s Office. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for his practical legal insight, commitment to training, and ability to bridge the gap between legal theory and real-world application. His background includes significant experience in felony prosecution, legal advising for law enforcement agencies, and teaching at both the university and academy levels.
He currently serves as Deputy County Attorney in Geary County, Kansas, where he appears on behalf of the State in criminal cases, with a focus on high-level and complex felony prosecutions. His responsibilities include reviewing warrant requests, evaluating cases submitted by law enforcement, determining readiness for charging, and assigning cases for prosecution. He works closely with local law enforcement agencies and provides ongoing training to support effective investigations and case preparation.
Previously, David served as Senior City Attorney and Police Legal Advisor for the City of Topeka, where he provided legal guidance to sworn personnel, command staff, city leadership, and the city attorney’s office. He played an active role in policy development and review, including use of force and pursuit policies, and was a member of multiple review boards addressing critical incidents and training standards. During this time, he also served as Interim Chief of Prosecution, overseeing prosecutorial operations during a leadership transition. In addition, he has experience as an Assistant District Attorney, handling felony cases on behalf of the State of Kansas.
Beyond his prosecutorial and advisory roles, David has contributed to legal education as an Adjunct Professor at both Washburn University and Neosho County Community College, where he taught courses in Criminal Law and Ethics. His combined experience in prosecution, legal advising, and instruction allows him to provide a well-rounded and practical perspective on how legal decisions impact law enforcement operations.
